Many people know the story of
the Shunammite woman who had a room built onto her home to
give the Prophet Elisha a place to rest. She blessed him so
he wanted to bless her. Every time he asked her what she
needed or wanted she responded, in complete contentment,
that she needed nothing. It seems that she had no selfish
motive in blessing the Man of God. Finally Elisha was told
she had no son. This was Elisha's opportunity to bless her.
15Then Elisha said, "Call her." So he called her, and she
stood in the doorway. 16"About this time next year," Elisha
said, "you will hold a son in your arms."
"No, my lord," she objected. "Don't mislead your servant, O
man of God!" 17But the woman became pregnant, and the next year about
that same time she gave birth to a son, just as Elisha had
told her. 2 Kings 4:15-17 (NIV)
At first the woman had difficulty believing that Elisha's
words could be true for her, but she eventually grasped the
promise and had the promised son.
There are many reasons having a son was so important to the
Shunammite: someone to carry on the family name and to take
care of her in her old age to name two.
Let us look a little deeper at the second part of the story.
Years later her son, still a child, got sick and died. This
mother, who at first did not believe Elisha's words that
she'd have a son, had by now so fully accepted the promise
as hers that she REFUSED to even verbalize that her son had
died. She also refused to believe that it was God's will for
her son to die in his youth because everything that goes
with having a son had not been realized (name carried on
etc.).
Telling everyone she encountered that "all is well" she went
to Elisha. The promise came through Elisha so she addressed
the situation only to him.
27When she reached the man of God at the mountain, she took
hold of his feet. Gehazi came over to push her away, but the
man of God said, "Leave her alone! She is in bitter
distress, but the LORD has hidden it from me and has not
told me why." 28"Did I ask you for a son, my lord?" she said. "Didn't I
tell you, 'Don't raise my hopes'?"
2 Kings 4:27-28 (NIV)
Elisha wanted to send his servant to take care of the
problem, but that was not good enough for the woman. She
went to the top and would not accept anything but the best
(so to say).
When God gives us a promise, take hold of it and REFUSE to
let go of it. When it looks like that promise has been
destroyed or only partially fulfilled then destroyed, go
back to the Heavenly Father and, as the Shunammite woman
did, demand the fulfillment of the promise. God NEVER breaks
his promises or his Word, so boldly and respectfully hold
him to his promises and his Word.
He likes that.
Remember...
We need to always focus on Christ!
The blessings of
our Lord on you and all that is yours by blood, adoption or assignment!
